Push Back

A Push Back Racking System is a high-density pallet storage solution designed to maximize warehouse space by storing pallets on a series of nested carts that move along inclined rails.

A Push Back Racking System is a high-density pallet storage solution designed to maximize warehouse space by storing pallets on a series of nested carts that move along inclined rails. Unlike selective pallet racking, this system allows pallets to be stored 2 to 6 deep, reducing aisle requirements and significantly increasing storage capacity. Each new pallet pushed into the system moves the previous pallet backward. When a pallet is removed, the remaining pallets automatically roll forward using gravity for easy access.

How Does Push Back Racking Work?

Push back racking operates on a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) inventory method. A pallet is first loaded onto a cart at the front position, and each additional pallet placed on the system pushes the previous one backward along wheeled carts. This allows multiple pallets to be stored in depth within the same lane. When unloading, the pallets automatically move forward by gravity, bringing the next pallet into position for easy access. This design eliminates the need for forklifts to enter the rack structure, significantly improving both safety and operational efficiency.

Common Applications & Uses

Push Back Racking Systems are ideal for:

Push Back Racking vs Selective Racking

FEATURE PUSH BACK RACKING SELECTIVE RACKING
Storage Density
High (multiple pallets in depth)
Low (one pallet per position)
Space Utilization
Maximizes available space
Requires more aisles
Accessibility
LIFO (Last-In, First-Out)
FIFO (flexible access to all pallets)
Forklift Operation
Operates from aisle only
Forklifts enter aisles frequently
Efficiency
Faster loading/unloading
Slower compared to push back
Safety
Higher (less rack impact risk)
Moderate (more forklift traffic inside aisles)
Ideal Use
Medium SKU, high volume per SKU
High SKU variety, low volume per SKU
Installation Cost
Higher initial investment
Lower initial cost
Return on Investment
Higher long-term efficiency
Lower compared to push back
